Geometry

It is surprising how we often don’t know some very basic words, simply because we never thought we would use them in English. But you might be surprised how often geometrical shapes are discuessed Smile Anyway, here are some basic vocabulary, hope it helps and that the joke at the end makes it worth your time.

  • square – čtverec
  • triangle – trojúhelník
  • rectangle – obdélník
  • circle – kruh
  • area – obsah
  • volume – objem
  • acute angle – ostrý úhel
  • right angle – pravý úhel
  • perpendicular – kolmý, svírající pravý úhel
  • obtuse angle – tupý úhel
  • parallel – rovnoběžný
  • line – přímka
  • abscissa – úsečka (v životě jsem to nikoho neslyšel použít)
  • pi – Ludolfovo číslo, pí (čti “páj”)
  • diamond – kosočtverec
  • cylinder – válec
  • cone – kužel
  • pyramid – jehlan

And now, the joke:

Oh, and one more:

Q: What did the oak tree say to the acorn.
A: Gee, I’m a tree.
