I take thee, Rachel (wedding vocabulary)

Do you recognize this sentence: “I take thee, Rachel… Emily!” ? Chances are you know the TV series Friends and remember how Ross said the wrong name at the altar. Anyway, today I was at a wedding and I thought the English ceremony has some nice vocabulary in it.

  • Bachelor party – rozlučka se svobodou
  • Are you registred? – Máte někde seznam darů, které vám můžeme koupit?
  • Civil ceremony – svatba na úřadě
  • White wedding or wedding in a church – svatba v kostele
  • Best man – ženichův svědek
  • Maid of honor – svědkyně nevěsty
  • Bridesmaids – družičky
  • Wedding vows – svatební sliby
  • I,Ross, take thee, Rachel, to be my lawfully wedded wife – Já, Ross, beru si tebe (archaicky), Emily, za svou právoplatnou manželku
  • Walk down the aisle – vést uličkou k oltáři
  • Speak now or forever hold your peace – nechť promluví teď nebo mlčí navždy
  • Happy couple, Newlyweds – novomanželé
  • Honeymoon – svatební cesta, líbánky
